I love cooking in my crockpot. It lets me get things started on my own schedule. Time to start dinner early in the day? Low setting. In the afternoon? High setting. Not sure? Medium setting and keep an eye on things in case it’s too fast or too slow. But when I read about people cooking with their crockpots I can tell there’s a huge range of actual temperatures when you talk about low or high settings. My best guess is, of course, that there is no standard set for temperatures, and that the size of the crockpot may make a difference too. If you watch the troubles people have with it, that’s the only thing that really makes any sense. Well, that or poor quality from the manufacturer. Can’t help but wonder about that too. What this means is that you need to figure out how your crockpot cooks. If things are done quickly even on low, you may be best off using that setting even when the recipe calls for a high setting, just so that things don’t get overcooked. Crockpot cooking is something of an art form. It’s easy to blow it and come out with tender yet utterly bland food. But you can also make marvelous meals that the entire family will enjoy, while leaving yourself free from slaving over a hot stove all day.
