Everyone has heard about the importance of keeping the level of fat in the diet to a minimum. While some fat in the diet is necessary, most Americans eat far too many fatty foods. Fats do play a vital role in the diet, including in the absorption of important fat soluble vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. These vitamins are stored in fatty tissues, and dietary fat aids in this process. Too much fat in the diet, however has been linked to high cholesterol, heart disease and even some kinds of cancers. Eating less fat, especially less saturated fat and trans fats, is an important part of adopting healthier eating habits. For this reason, it is important to use foods that are high in dietary fats as an occasional snack or treat, and not as a staple of the diet. Many meats are high in fat, so it is important to choose lean cuts of meat whenever possible, and to trim excess fat from steaks and chops. Even some poultry can be high in fat, and for this reason, removing the skin from chicken, and avoiding fatting dark meat, is a good practice to follow. If you’re at that time in your life where you are tired of having poor eating habits you might be concerned that it will be too hard to become a healthy eater. Fortunately it really isn’t as hard as it might seem. Being a healthy eater doesn’t have to involve calculating grams of fat or counting calories. It is about balancing your diet and eating appropriate amounts. Part of eating healthy is eating a variety of foods. You want to be sure you eat from all the food groups, not just focusing on your favorites. You need to eat at least three times a day, and yes, that does mean don’t skip breakfast. You should recognize as you build your healthy eating habits that you need to give yourself some leeway. Don’t feel like a failure if you have some less than nutritious foods, fail to balance your meals sometimes or eat too much. You’re human. Enjoying what you eat is certainly acceptable. So long as your normal habits provide you with all the nutrients to keep you healthy and keep your mind alert you’re doing pretty well. Are you eating enough vegetables? The new food guidelines issued by the United States government recommend that all Americans eat between five and nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Now this may sound like a lot, but it really isn’t. Despite that, an amazing number of people do not eat enough vegetables and fruits every day. Fortunately, it really is not that hard to add more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Just head to your local supermarket and look at the selection. There’s plenty to choose from. Not only that, but eating healthy fruits and vegetable isn’t that expensive. Many of them cost far less than you might be thinking. With a little practice and determination you can use fresh fruits and vegetables to replace unhealthier snacks. One serving is not all that much. One of the reasons many people feel overwhelmed when they hear how many servings per day they should eat is that they don’t really realize how small a serving is. It’s nothing close to what you get when you order the large meal at the fast food restaurant. A small apple is about the size of one serving of fruit or vegetables.
